Stone steps

Stone steps made of natural stone or artificial stone are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Whether it's a spiral staircase to the upper floor or prestigious steps at the front door, stone steps make a strong statement and are an absolute eye-catcher. Stone steps can be laid relatively quickly and can beautify and enhance your garden or the front of your home, as well as the staircase inside. They can add a touch of luxury to your home that no other material can match.

Stone steps made of natural stone are durable, easy to clean, non-slip, particularly robust, frost-resistant and resistant to weathering. In outdoor areas, steps with a rough surface are particularly recommended, as this minimizes the risk of slipping and ensures sure-footedness. Indoors, polished stone steps are preferred due to their elegant appearance.

What are the advantages of stone steps?

The advantages of stone steps over steps made of other materials are manifold. Compared to wooden steps, for example, they are much more durable. Maintenance is also easier in comparison. While wooden steps in outdoor areas need to be regularly treated against moisture and other weather-related influences, regular cleaning is sufficient for stone steps.

Due to their robustness, they also offer a high degree of safety. Stone steps are also characterized by a wide variety of surfaces. You can choose from smooth, matt, polished, honed, brushed or flamed surfaces. Another advantage of natural stone steps is the variety of colors, textures, shades and nuances. This allows you to design the steps to suit your taste and integrate them into the visual concept of your home or garden.

Which natural stone is suitable for stone steps?

The most commonly used types of stone for stairs, depending on whether they are used outdoors or indoors, are slate, marble, limestone, sandstone, travertine and granite.

- Slate
Slate has excellent properties in terms of strength and durability. It is resistant to moisture and retains heat very well. Slate is particularly suitable for indoor use.
Marble
Its durability and unique, albeit varied, appearance, coupled with its luxurious flair, make marble one of the most sought-after natural stones for interior staircases.
Limestone
Limestone is a natural stone that is particularly easy to work with, which makes it very versatile. Limestone was already used in ancient buildings and, with the right sealant, is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

- Sandstone
Sandstone impresses with its wide variety of colors. The sedimentary rock is particularly durable and versatile. Sandstone is also easy to maintain and, compared to marble or granite, is one of the most affordable natural stones.
- Travertine
Travertine is porous and interspersed with cavities, which makes it easy to work with on the one hand, but sensitive to frost on the other. The natural stone is therefore more suitable for indoor use.
- Granite
Granite is hygienic, easy to clean, robust and resistant to moisture. Thanks to its material properties, it is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use and its polished surface adds a touch of luxury to any staircase.

Requirements for stone steps

The requirements for stone steps depend on whether they are laid inside buildings or outside. While the main requirement for outdoor areas is resistance to weathering and frost, this does not play a role inside buildings. There, the focus is more on the visual properties and maintenance of the steps.

In both cases, safety is an important issue, so it is important to ensure that the natural stone used is of impeccable quality - for example, it should not have any continuous cracks, as there would be a risk of breakage at these points due to the load. Stone steps should also be non-slip, which is either provided by the natural, rough surface of the stone or can be ensured by treating the surface accordingly.
