Stonemasons have the job, Producing gravestonesto be inscribed and moved. To do this, the stones must first be split, cut, ground and polished by the stonemason. In the past, these stones were always natural stones (such as marble, granite, sandstone), but nowadays they can also be artificial stones (such as porcelain stoneware, Dekton).
In terms of design, stonemasons are guided by the wishes of the bereaved or the deceased, provided they have communicated their wishes to their relatives. Ornaments, geometric shapes, profiles and symbols are often incorporated into the Grave design integrated. Machines as well as traditional tools - such as chisels - are used to insert dates, grave inscriptions, ornaments and the like.
But this is not where the tasks end. Because stonemasons are also in contact with the respective cemetery - from which they collect the Consent for the installation of the gravestone on. This consent is always required.
Here in Austria, stonemasons are commissioned by the relatives of the deceased to make the headstone.
Graves and headstones are now available in a wide variety of designs and shapes. You can find all the information about the different types of graves here:

Gravestones can be made from a wide variety of materials:
Natural stone
This is the number 1 choice for gravestones. Granite, quartzite, mica schist, sandstone, basalt, marble and gneiss are particularly popular for gravestones.
Wood
More unusual, but also a beautiful option. Wood has a soft appearance and is treated several times to make this gravestone weather-resistant.
Glass
Usually only individual elements of a gravestone are made of glass, but sometimes gravestones can also be made entirely of glass. Different colors are also often used here.
Do you know these rust-red gravestones? These are graves made of metal. Rust steel, stainless steel and bronze are also possible materials.
Material mix
Gravestones can also consist of a combination of materials. For example, a piece of glass or a glass line can be set into a natural stone.
How quickly a headstone can be erected (=placed) after the actual burial depends on the Grave type and the Soil quality from.
In the case of an urn grave, for example, this is possible immediately after the grave has been closed, whereas in the case of a burial in the ground, the earth must first compact after the burial. The purpose of this is to ensure that the headstone remains firmly in place and does not loosen or tip over.
So how long it ultimately takes varies from cemetery to cemetery; it can be a few weeks, but sometimes a few months.
The cost of a gravestone can be very different be. The following factors are taken into account:
The rarer the color or grain of a gravestone, for example, the higher the costs.
The costs for an earth grave are around 5,000 euros, for an urn grave around 1,500 euros. If only a grave slab (without foundation etc.) is to be used, the costs are similar to those for an urn grave.
The Size of the grave determines the cost of the headstone. A crypt or a family grave are also more expensive.
